A right Royal Tour of the Lakes

First in 1956 and again in 2013, the dearly departed Queen Elizabeth II visited some of the most stunning beauty spots the Lake District has to offer and here are some handpicked highlights from her tours for you to discover, as she did.

Kendal Town

Kendal is a quaint English town explored by The Queen and Princess Anne back in 2013. Boasting independent shops, markets, shopping centres and yards plus restaurants and cafes, there are plenty of opportunities to purchase some of the ‘Made in Cumbria’ products gifted to The Queen during her visit. A special feature of Kendal is their 13th-century castle, which was the seat of power for the barons of Kendal for over 200 years. With audio tours that can be downloaded from the website to guide you around the ruins, Kendal Castle is a historical landmark worth visiting.

Lake cruise

In 1956, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was accompanied by her husband Prince Philip on a cruise across Lake Windermere from Ambleside to Bowness onboard MV Teal and then again in 2013, but this time she was joined by The Princess Royal on a cruise from Bowness to Brockhole. With lots of routes to choose from and individual journey or flexible day tickets available, there are options for everyone to experience the same stunning views that The Queen did on her cruise across England’s largest lake.

Brockhole on Windermere

Another essential stop on your recreation of the Royal Tour is The Lake District Visitor Centre in Brockhole, which offers something for everyone. With a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities to accommodate the English Summer weather, there is always fun to be had at The Brockhole Estate. There are lots of exciting activities on offer for adventure seekers such as Laser Clay Shooting, Krazy Karts, Brave the Cave or Treetop nets. However, if adrenaline-inducing activities are not your cup of tea then there is a Lake District Story Exhibition and the Brockhole House and Gardens to be explored.
